Chapter 10

“I wonder if we could just follow Officer Staubb and see where he goes. We might actually find something out,” Severine suggested to Bernadette who shook her head.

“You don’t really mean that,” Charles said with horror and Severine rolled her eyes with the reply he deserved.

Lisette came into the room, saw the lobster rolls, groaned, and disappeared. She returned a moment later with a lobster roll on a plate and took a seat. “Fabian sent his brothers and cousins to each of those addresses. There’s nothing to be seen. Other than Landon Gentry. He’s been at many of them.”

“He must work for whoever is trying to control Andre,” Charles muttered and then groaned when Severine rolled her eyes again. “I know, I know, we already knew that.”

“I wish we could just put a pile of money in front of him and pay for the information.” Severine rubbed her brow and then glanced at Bernadette who watched her carefully.

“We need to do something next,” Lisette said. Greyson Thorne and Osiris Oliver arrived at the same time as she spoke and Osiris sarcastically muttered, “Hear, hear.”

“Severine thinks we should put pressure on her uncles and business partners by selling some of the properties,” Charles told them as they took their seats. A moment later, Edmée and Chantae appeared with food for everyone, and they stared at each other, each pausing in their own way.

“When I first came to the United States, I found a man who helped me with looking for my wife. We couldn’t find her, obviously, but he said that the best thing I could do was put pressure on the situation and then watch what happens.”

“So you think it’s a good plan?” Charles asked. “Lukas told us to leave the business as it was.”

“Lukas,” Bernadette cut in, “shouldn’t have ensured that Severine was raised with morals if he expected her to sit on a throne of broken dreams and thievery.”

“I want to sell Hotel DuNoir,” Severine said and then watched the others react.

“Oh my,” Bernadette said and then laughed. “That will enrage them, won’t it?”

Severine chuckled. “That’s what we want, isn’t it? Rather than staying in this endless loop of wondering which of them is hiding in the shadows. Let’s start giving them reasons to come out of the shadows. Also, I have no attachment to the DuNoir family name or legacy. If anything—” She shook her head because if anything, what she had was shame and a desire to be something else, anything else.

“We all have good and bad in our pasts and in our families, Sev,” Greyson said. “You don’t have to carry that as though it’s just your family. My great uncle murdered his brother and, it was later discovered, had been cheating with his brother’s wife for years. It was never clear which children were my grandfather’s and which were the great uncle’s, so we just leaned into the lie.”

Severine’s eyes widened and Greyson’s burst of laughter somehow changed the feel of the whole moment.
